Out of sequin ashes, a Phoenix was reborn at the Whistle Stop Saturday night. The mythological bird— Rod Zelles—has been hosting the Loud and Proud Party at the Stop since its inception two years ago. But this year, rather than appearing as himself, he was challenged to take the stage in drag.
Although a few years since his last performance, Zelles proved that no matter how long the hiatus, a queen never loses her ability to dazzle a crowd—especially when her dress reflects light like a disco ball.
The Loud and Proud Party, which features a drag show and a dance party, has become a staple in the Jasper in January line-up, with the bar reaching capacity each year and the dance party carrying through right up to last call.
Joining Phoenix on stage, Saturday, were Missy Fufu and Kitty LeBehr, as well as the evening’s hosts, Toni Lester Van Blam and Vanessa (Hughie) Van Tramp.
