Jasper was awash in red and white to celebrate Canada's 148th birthday, July 1.

Following tradition, hundreds of people started the day with a pancake breakfast hosted by the municipality.

After wiping off the maple syrup, Parks Canada hosted a flag raising ceremony on the information centre lawn to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag.

MP Jim Eglinski, Mayor Richard Ireland and Jasper National Park Superintendent Greg Fenton were all in attendance.

Following the flag raising, thousands of people lined up along Pyramid Lake Road, Connaught Drive and Patricia Street to take part in the annual Canada Day parade.

From marching Mounties to flashy floats, the parade was a huge success.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was named the best float of the parade, while the Municipality of Jasper won best environmentally friendly or “green” float.

The best walking group went to the Jasper Artist Guild, who cleverly used the opportunity to remind the public they are still waiting for the long overdue Library and Cultural Centre to be completed.

The Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre won the award for best representation of this year's theme: the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag.

The festivities wrapped up at Centennial Park with a fireworks display and beer gardens.
