Marmot ends season in style

About 40 people ditched their skis and boards and jumped on a fat bike during Marmot Basin’s second annual dual slalom/fat bike race on Saturday.

The competition had skiers and boarders race down the slope of Highway 16, before kicking off their skis and boards at the finish line to make a mad dash to their partner, waiting on a fat bike nearby.

Once tagged, racers then took off on their beefy bikes, circling the snow-covered track twice before crossing the finish line.

While the majority of people were able to stay on two wheels, there were a few tumbles and close calls that added to the suspense.

This year’s winners were Jack Bennet and Graham Swann.

In addition to Saturday’s race, Marmot Basin ended the season in style with nearly 30 people showcasing their best retro gear in a fashion show at the mid-chalet.

Bernie Kreiner from Hinton impressed the judges with his wool attire and old school skis.

He told the judges he has skied at Marmot Basin since the 60s when there were only two T-bars in operation.

With the 2014/15 ski season now officially over, skiers and snowboarders will have to wait patiently until next year before they can shred again.
