A Jasper team skipped by Brad Vancuren took home the trophy at the Jasper Curling Club’s mens bonspiel, Feb. 9.
Vancuren and his team mates, Rob Scott, Terry Johnston and PK Kowalski, stuck it to their competitors from Leduc in Sunday’s skins game, taking home $350 of the possible $500 prize.
Along with a little extra cash, each member of the team also got his hands on a “bear.”
Bears are the hand-carved and painted trophies handed out to winners of Jasper curling tournaments. According to club member Lee Chorley, they are among the most coveted prizes in the region.
“Whenever you go to a tournament, everybody always ask ‘have you got a bear yet?’” she said.
Twelve teams came out to the tournament this year.
By all accounts the competition was great fun, thanks in part to the exceptional ice conditions, courtesy of the club’s long-time icemaker Wally Kortzman.
Chorley said the tournament was a big success, and looks forward to the rest of the club’s upcoming bonspiels.
