Each year Jasper students accept a dare to make good decisions for a healthy and safe life.

D.A.R.E.—Drug Abuse Resistance Education—is taught to Grade 6 students at Jasper Elementary School and École Desrochers, preparing them for situations they might encounter as they move into high school.

The program is designed to give students the tools they need to make responsible and healthy choices about drugs, alcohol and smoking and to resist peer pressure.

This year’s graduating class was taught by Jasper RCMP’s Cst. Scott Kirychuk, who often entered the classroom after a night shift or on his days off, spending more than 25 hours with the students, who participated during their lunch hours.

“The 32 children that I instructed this year were a joy to teach,” said Kirychuk. “They always came to D.A.R.E. class full of enthusiasm and excitement and made this a very enjoyable experience.

“I know that the D.A.R.E. program provides essential skills for the students and hope that it can continue in the future.”

The graduates received certificates and t-shirts celebrating their achievement.
