The Jasper Curling Club turned into party central last weekend as it hosted its annual women’s bonspiel.
The tournament is one of the most popular in the region, and this year 23 teams came out to take part in the weekend-long event.
Club member Lee Chorley explained that because it’s the the club’s 90th anniversary this year, it made a special concession and gave its signature bear trophies out to the winners of the three finals.
The “bears” are small trophies specially made by Jasper’s Arvin Hillworth, and are a hot commodity for curlers in the region. Chorley said they’re not normally given out at the men’s and women’s bonspiels, but because of the special circumstances this year, the club decided to give a few more curlers a chance to win a bear.
Action on the ice was competitive—with the tournament broken down into the A, B and C events—with the finals for each held Sunday, March 16.
In the A final, Jasper’s Dew rink—made up of skip Brenda Dew, third Meaghan Olson, second Carol Ward and lead Aggie Johnston—represented their hometown well, taking home the top prize.
The Bobwick team from Cochrane came out on top in the B event and the Dale Bentley Trucking rink won the C event.
