It will soon be a little bit easier for veterans to explore the great outdoors thanks to a new program organized by the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion.
Veteran Adventures aims to make it easier for veterans to get their hands on equipment such as tents and mountain bikes free of charge, so they can get out and enjoy Jasper National Park without barriers.
“We’re putting together a program that is focused on some of the younger veterans,” said Ken Kuzminski, president of the Jasper Legion.
“All legions have to redefine who they are. Throwing darts and playing pool is maybe what they were before, but we’re trying to offer something that younger veterans might use and take advantage of.”
The program is open to veterans across the country and will be up and running by July 1.
“War can leave some emotional as well as physical scars, so to spend a weekend or a couple of days in Jasper and to be able to reconnect with nature, themselves, and the country might be beneficial,” he said.
Without the support of local businesses, such as Freewheel Cycle and Source for Sports, the program wouldn’t be possible, said Kuzminski.
In addition to equipment rentals, other businesses have also stepped up offering free horseback rides, boat tours and hotel accommodations.
According to Kuzminski, often times the focus is on veterans from the Second World War and Korean War, so this program aims to cater toward veterans from the Afghanistan war.
Donated items, passes, hotel rooms and other materials will be available to veterans and their spouses, children, caregivers and friends.
“They may not have a tent, a backpack, a sleeping bag or a first aid kit, so we’re just trying to provide a few things to make it easier,” said Keith Henderson, coordinator for the program.
He said they are also hoping to raise money to buy a few kayaks or canoes.
