Trail closures for dam upgrades

Parks Canada started construction on Cabin Lake Dam, Aug. 25, closing a number of trails until December.

Cabin Lake provides water for fire protection, as well as a back-up supply of potable water for the Jasper townsite. Earlier this year, as part of a $211 million funding announcement, the federal government slated $1.6 million toward the rehabilitation of its dam in order for it to meet dam safety review requirements.

During construction, Cabin Lake Fire Road (Trail 8e) will be closed at all times, as well as Trail 3 from its junction with 3g to its junction with 8b, and the entirety of Trail 3g.

Users of Trail 8 and Trail 8c (Mina Riley Loop) will be able to cross Cabin Lake Fire Road during construction.

Recreational use of Cabin Lake will be restricted during construction and there will be no public access to the east side of the lake.

Construction is expected to be completed by December.

Local seniors warns of phone scam

A Jasper senior had to cancel all of her credit cards this summer after she was duped by a telephone scam. Then when she received a similar call last week, she decided it was time to warn the community.

The woman, who’s asked to remain anonymous, received a call a month and a half ago offering to lower her interest rates. It wasn’t until after she’d provided her credit card information that she realized it was a scam.

“I fell for it and by the time my husband got home and we got my credit cards cancelled, they had already tried to order a computer.”

Fortunately, her credit card company caught the unusual spending and it wasn’t charged to her account.

Then last week the woman received a similar call, making her wonder if other Jasper seniors are being targeted, so she reported the scam to the Jasper RCMP and contacted the Fitzhugh.

The RCMP’s advice is “if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.”

In other words, if a telemarketer offers a valuable prize—or in this case a lower interest rate—don’t be fooled into handing over your personal or financial information.

If you are contacted by someone who promises a prize or says you’ve won a prize, hang up the phone and call the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
