December Project takes off

A new community initiative has sprung up in town, challenging Jasperites to stay active and contribute to a good cause during the month of December.

The December Project asks members to perform some type of physical activity every day during December. That means walking, snowshoeing, running, skiing or fat biking at least a kilometre—or taking part in activities like fitness classes or yoga.

Group members are also asked to donate a minimum of $10 to Advocates for Special Kids (ASK)—a non-profit organization with a mandate to help those children in Jasper who need a leg up either physically or intellectually.

As of Dec. 2, the group boasted 125 members on Facebook.

Anyone interested in joining the initiative is encouraged to check out the group’s Facebook page and drop off a $10 donation at the Bear’s Paw Bakery or the Other Paw Bakery.

A new way to donate

Santas Anonymous is still looking for donations for its Christmas hampers, and this year the organization is making it easier than ever to donate, with a digital buy list on its Facebook page.

Anyone who would like to donate a specific item requested by a family can check out the list online, or call the organization directly at 780-883-0334.

Every year Santas Anonymous organizes events throughout November and December to raise money to aid families during the holiday season. The organization provides more than 50 families with gift and food hampers each year.

The organization’s most popular fundraising event, The Santa Train, was postponed last week, after extreme cold delayed VIA Rail trains. According to Ann Thomas of Santas Anonymous, the event will now take place Tuesday, Dec. 9, with trains departing at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Film Club screening: Tracks

The latest offering of the Jasper Film Club, Tracks, tells the true story of Robyn Davidson, a woman who leaves her life in the city to trek solo through almost 2,700 kilometres of sprawling Australian desert.

Accompanied by her dog Diggity and four unruly camels, Davidson hikes across the Australian desert for nine months, occasionally joined by a National Geographic photographer.

Featuring a gripping performance by Mia Wasikowska, the film is the work of the Academy-Award-winning producers of The King’s Speech.

Critics have lauded its stunning cinematography, and the emotional depth Wasikowska brings to the screen, despite the film’s limited dialogue.

Tracks screens Dec. 4 at the Chaba Theatre, starting at 7 p.m.
