Celebrating French culture
Jasper’s Francophone community is inviting everyone to share in French culture, March 14, at l’Association Canadienne Francophone de l’Alberta’s annual Sugar Shack at the Jasper Legion.
The event, which is part of Les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie—an annual celebration of French language and culture—includes a traditional meal of meat pies and dessert of maple on a stick, as well as music by bluesman Mike Deway, who will play traditional French songs.
Dinner will be served between 5 and 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available by contacting Valérie Chérétaki of the ACFA at [email protected] or by calling 780-852-7476.
“This is a good occasion for everyone to find out what is a sugar shack,” said Chérétaki, adding that she hopes to see people from all parts of the community attend.
As well as the sugar shack, there are many other events taking place during Les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, including a French storytime for children six years old and under on March 17 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the activity centre.
Volunteers needed for Canada Day
The Canada Day Committee needs your help. It’s looking for people who are keen to lend a hand, as well as people with great ideas to make this year’s event better than ever.
The Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce took over the committee last year and will be hosting its first Canada Day celebration this July. The hope is that, as well as the mainstays of the event, there will be an all out bash in Centennial Park July 1.
If you’re interested in participating in the organization of the event or you have some ideas for improving this year’s celebration, contact the chamber at [email protected].
Library project update
Work on the final phase of the municipality’s Library and Cultural Centre is taking a little longer than planned, but that shouldn’t affect the overall completion date of the project.
In December, a master schedule for the completion of the project was released, which set month-by-month progress goals. According to that schedule, work on the floors, walls, drywalls and painting was to be completed by the end of February.
Mark Fercho, the chief administrative officer for the Municipality of Jasper, told council March 10 that the delay is due to the time-consuming nature of fixing the floors.
Workers have been grinding the floors flat after they were found to be crooked late last year.
Work on the drywall and painting cannot be started until the floors are complete, and since grinding continues, those aspects of the project remain unfinished.
Fercho said that although “some components of the project are behind schedule,” it shouldn’t affect the overall schedule of the project.
“Everything else seems on track,” he said, noting that he is still anticipating the project will be completed by Sept. 1.
