RCMP warn against tax scam
With tax season upon us, the Jasper RCMP has received a spike in complaints regarding fraudulent communications from people claiming to represent the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA).
According to police, people have received automated and personal phone calls requesting personal information, such as social insurance numbers, credit card numbers, bank account information and passport numbers.
The scams often insist that personal information is needed so the victim can receive a refund or a benefit payment. In some situations, threatening or coercive language is used to scare individuals into paying fictitious debt to the CRA.
Police are asking the public to avoid providing personal information over the phone unless they are certain they know who they are dealing with.
If you suspect you may be the victim of fraud or have been tricked into giving personal or financial information, contact the Jasper RCMP detachment at 780-852-4421. For further information about the scam, visit the CRA’s website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca.
