Meeting cancelled for mid-term review

The Sept. 22 committee of the whole meeting is cancelled in order for council to review and revise the Strategic Priorities it set out following the 2013 municipal election.

“We're halfway through our term, so I think it's quite appropriate that we review what we listed and where we're at,” said Coun. Brian Nesbitt, as council passed a motion to cancel the meeting.

The Municipality's Strategic Priorities, which are available on the municipal website, are meant to guide council through its term, which ends in 2017, covering everything from organizational and fiscal health to relationships and communications.

Some of council's priorities include developing a long term asset management plan, reviewing the Jasper Community Sustainability Plan, creating an effective chief administrative officer performance and evaluation plan and completing the library and cultural centre.

Rutting season is in effect

Jasper's bull elk are on the prowl, collecting their harem of ladies and doing everything in their power to protect them.

Rutting season—elk mating season—is when bull elk are at their most dangerous. Visitors and locals are advised to watch elk from a distance and to follow a few easy safety tips to stay safe this fall.

Elk encounters can be avoided by staying 30 metres away from all elk, never standing or parking between a male and females and by travelling in groups.

If the encounter can't be avoided, Parks Canada advises people to act dominant if an elk gets too close, seek out protection behind a tree or vehicle, to raise your arms and flap your jacket to make yourself appear larger, maintain eye contact and move away slowly.

If you're knocked down, get up. Never play dead.

If you have an elk encounter, report it to Parks at 780-852-6155.
