RCMP investigates rash of thefts

In the early morning hours of Aug. 4, the Jasper RCMP received numerous reports of car theft, as well as theft from cars and vending machines.

Two vehicles were reported stolen, a Dodge Ram and a white Mitsubishi SUV. The keys to the Dodge Ram were taken from an unlocked residence and the truck was stolen from the street. It was later recovered in a parking lot within the townsite.

The SUV was stolen from the Cabin Creek area. The vehicle was unlocked and the keys were inside, according to the RCMP.

There were three thefts from vehicles reported, as well, with binoculars, cameras, sunglasses and other miscellaneous items taken from inside the ttvehicles.

“The thieves seem to have been targeting unlocked vehicles,” wrote Const. Ryan Gardiner in an email. “It is likely that other unlocked vehicles were stolen from, however [those thefts] were not reported to the police.”

Four vending machines located in various places throughout the town were also broken into, with coins stolen from inside the machines.

“We are currently working on getting some surveillance video footage of the thieves from both the stolen vehicle files, as well as the thefts from the vending machines,” wrote Gardiner. “If we can obtain some quality images we would look to share them with the public in hopes of identifying the persons responsible.”
