After receiving the necessary approvals, the municipality’s sidewalk seating pilot project is in action.

As of last week, 13 of 16 eligible restaurants had obtained permits to erect sidewalk seating outside their establishments, according to Mark Fercho, municipal chief administrative officer.

He said it’s expected that all 16 will have their permits shortly and that patio seating will start appearing soon.

Parks Canada approved the municipality’s one-year sidewalk seating pilot project April 30, authorizing the municipality to issue permits to the restaurants that have met all of the necessary requirements.

It was then up to restauranteurs to obtain liability insurance for a minimum of $2 million and to present proof of that insurance to the municipality, in order to receive a permit.

The 16 eligible restaurants were selected after the municipality’s March application process.

Each restaurant had to prove there is room for 1.8 metres of unobstructed sidewalk beside its proposed sidewalk seating. This requirement meets national standards for sidewalk width and was confirmed by municipal staff, which visited each restaurant to take its own measurements.

Library progress report

Construction is ticking along at the long overdue library and cultural centre.

The latest progress report, outlining what was completed in April, shows that millwork is ongoing, ceramic tile installation in the bathrooms is 90 per cent completed, guardrails and handrails in the heritage building are complete, exterior eaves and downspouts on the heritage building are complete, electrical installation is ongoing and exterior stucco removal and reinstallation is ongoing, with 60 per cent of the removal completed and about 20 per cent of reinstallation completed.

During May, the report says that the contractors will continue the stucco remediation, continue ceramic tile installation, continue installing wood doors and millwork, pour concrete topping on the basement floor and prepare the elevator for cedar accent walls.

Last December, a master schedule for the completion of the project was released, setting month-by-month progress goals.

That timeline, which was updated last month, has been agreed upon by Stantec, Delnor and the municipality and is now the guiding document that will lead the project to its September completion.

Council will receive a progress report from the contractors, outlining what has been completed the previous month, at the first committee-of-the-whole meeting of each month.

Roots tunes at Olive

Winnipeg roots duo Last Ditch on the Left will deliver a raw, playful and sassy set at the Olive Bistro, May 28.

The duo is made up of Kerri Stephens and Brett Warren. The two have been dating and playing music for years, although it wasn’t until 2013 that they finally laid down some tracks, creating their first record full of haunting harmonies.

The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.
