Get out and vote

The municipal election is Monday, Oct. 21.

Polls will be open at the Jasper Activity Centre from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

In order to vote, you need to present at least one piece of approved identification. Included in that list are Alberta driver’s licenses, government issued identification from the province of Alberta, bank or credit card statements, a personal cheque, or a government cheque or pay stub.

There is a full list of acceptable identification on the municipality’s website, or for further information, see page 7.

Recognizing excellence in business

The annual Business and Ambassador Awards Gala, hosted by the Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce, is Oct. 18. This is the third year for the ambassador awards and fourth for the business awards.

The theme is Star Gazing, as the gala is the official kick-off of Dark Sky Week.

The event is sold out, but the chamber has a waiting list for those who want to attend and haven’t yet bought a ticket.

Following dinner at the Lobstick Lodge, a number of Jasperites will be recognized for excellence in business and individual achievement. This year, a young entrepreneur award has been added to the list.

Cocktails are at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m.

Swappin’ skis

The Jasper Ski Team’s annual ski swap is Saturday, Oct. 19.

For those looking to sell their old gear, drop offs are from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Shopping will begin at noon and will wrap up at 3:30 p.m.

On sale will be all types of gear for snow sports, including snowboards, skis, boots, poles, helmets, jackets and snow pants.

The swap will take place at the Jasper Activity Centre.

New museum exhibit

Jasper local Libby Weir has her watercolour paintings and mixed media drawings hanging in the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives’ showcase gallery.

The show is titled Summer Diary: Mountain Landscapes of Jasper National Park.

The exhibit will remain in the museum until Nov. 10.

Secret moon watching in Jasper

Friends of Jasper National Park is offering a chance to bask in the glow of the full moon from a secret location somewhere in the park, Oct. 19.

During the full moon hike, a guide will take participants to one of his or her favourite places to soak in “the stars, nocturnal animals and things that go bump in the night.”

Anyone interested can pick up free tickets at the Friends’ shop in the information centre. But be quick: there are only 12 tickets, and they’re only available the day before the hike.

The hike will start at 8 p.m. and take about two hours.
