The Fitzhugh won four Canadian Community Newspaper Awards, March 27.

The awards include a Blue Ribbon, first place for Best Front Page, second place for Best Photo Essay and third place for Best Overall Newspaper with a circulation between 3,000 and 3,999.

The 2015 competition saw 264 publications submit more than 2,700 entries, representing their best work from 2014.

A winner’s book will be released at the end of April, showing which front page was selected, as well as which photo essay.

Skate park push continues

The group pushing for a new skate park is continuing its fight.

On March 25, about a dozen youth, accompanied by one of their adult allies, Darrell Savage, presented their ideas to the Jasper Community Team, and asked to come under its umbrella to conduct its fundraising.

The group is looking to raise $500,000 to build a state-of-the-art skate park in Jasper, but before it can begin it needs to establish itself as a not-for-profit organization.

Since that process is complicated, the group asked the Jasper Community Team for help.

While the team couldn’t give the skate park proponents an immediate answer, it did vote to give its support in principle to the group.

At the meeting, Savage said that while the group is still young it has plenty of passion.

Its first step will be to raise $10,000 for a design concept, at which point Savage expects momentum will pick up, as more people get behind the idea of a new skate park in town.

“I really want a skate park, and we realize we don’t have all the experience, but unless you just jump in and get started nothing will get done,” he said.

Jasper Works postponed

The Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce has postponed its non-traditional job fair until May.

Jasper Works was scheduled for April 15, but because of unforeseen circumstances, it will be delayed until an yet-to-be-determined date in May.

The job fair is an attempt to battle the labour shortages that have plagued businesses the past few summers.

It has two objectives: first, to attract new employees to Jasper and second, to show those people everything the community has to offer, in an effort to keep them here.

Stay tuned to the Fitzhugh for a new date.
