Housing Corp seeks partners for new development

This is the last week business owners and seniors can add their names to a list of people interested in participating in the planning and design of two new housing projects in town.

The Jasper Community Housing Corporation (JCHC) announced in early February that two plots of land have been tentatively set aside for development to help ease the town’s housing shortage. According to JCHC, the first project includes building up to 43 apartment-style units or 21 condo-style units beside Petro-Canada on Connaught Drive in the west end of town. The second project includes tearing down Parks Canada’s staff accommodation on Turret Street and replacing those building with up to 27 new units.

For more information about the projects, visit the municipality’s website www.jasper-alberta.com.

For those that are interested in participating in the design and planning process, contact JCHC by Feb. 25 at 780-852-6504 or [email protected].

Truck driver fined for overweight vehicle

A truck driver received a $1,500 fine for driving an overweight truck on the Icefields Parkway in Jasper Provincial Court, Feb. 11.

According to the Crown, the truck weighed 47,000 kg—10 times the permitted weight.

Shefqet Ramaj was pulled over by a park warden on Dec. 3, 2015 near the Sunwapta Warden Station, about 70 km south of Jasper.

According to Mike Misskey, a park warden, Ramaj entered Highway 93 from Saskatchewan Crossing, heading north, and was charged under the Canada National Parks Act.

Had the driver been charged under the provincial Traffic Safety Act he could have faced a fine of up to $14,500, according to Misskey.

Jasper Pride to host beard contest

The Jasper Pride Festival may still be a month away, but there’s one event people can start preparing for today.

On March 18, the Jasper Pride Festival Society will be judging who has the best beard during the Lum-Bear-Jack Party at the Whistle Stop Pub.

Organizers are encouraging people to dress up in their favourite bear or lumberjack outfit and check out High-Strung Downers, a four-piece rock and roll band from Calgary.

The event is free of charge and is a fundraiser to support the Jasper Gay-Straight Alliance, as well as brain injury awareness.

The Jasper Pride Festival begins March 17 and includes 24 events over four days. For more information, check out the organization’s website www.jasperpride.ca.
