Half marathon a week away
Jasper’s first half marathon is April 16.
The Jasper Canadian Rockies Half-Marathon is a 21-km race. It also includes a one-km family run, a five-km run/walk, as well as a 10-km run.
According to the event’s website, the 21-km race will begin in front of the Jasper Visitor Information Centre and head out of town on Connaught Drive, before turning left onto Sleepy Hollow Road.
Runners will then turn right onto Hazel Avenue to Old Fort Point Road and follow that road past the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge until they reach Lake Annette Road.
From there, runners will follow Lake Annette Road, circle Lake Edith and return the way they came.
Once they hit Hazel Avenue they will cross Connaught Drive at the lights, before turning right onto Patricia Street. The finish line will be on the other side of the information centre lawn, in front of the post office.
To minimize disruption to traffic, organizers will briefly shut down Connaught Drive and one lane on Patricia Street.
To register for the race or for more information, visit www.jaspercanadianrockieshalf.ca. Ten dollars from every entry goes to the Ronald McDonald House.
Two charged for possession of meth, ecstasy
The RCMP charged two people with possession of a controlled substance after finding meth and ecstasy in their vehicle during a roadside stop, April 2.
According to police, the RCMP stopped a vehicle that was driving erratically around 3 a.m. and found methamphetamine and ecstasy as well as several tools that appeared to be used for breaking into vehicles.
The Jasper RCMP wants to remind people that Jasper is not immune to crime.
“Cars should be locked and valuables removed when the vehicle is parked. As Jasper becomes busier in the months ahead, the more attractive it becomes to travelling criminals who come to Jasper for the sole purpose of committing theft from vehicles and other property crimes,” wrote Const. Scott Kirychuk, in a press release.
Shelly McIntyre, 52 and Mark Innes, 39, both from British Columbia, were charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Innes was also charged with five counts for breaching his probation, including having tools outside of his residence.
McIntyre was released on her own recognizance while Innes was given $1,500 cash bail.
Anyone with information regarding theft from vehicles or any other crime is asked to contact Jasper RCMP at 780-852-4421 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
