Dam still under construction

Despite a completion date slated for December 2015, the Cabin Lake Dam is still under construction and is now expected to be finished by mid-summer.

Recreational use of Cabin Lake continues to be restricted during construction and there is no public access to the east side of the lake.

Joseph Zebrowski, a communications officer for Jasper National Park, said that in December, additional work was identified on the front face of the dam that was not part of the original project. It was discovered that a structure had been built on the lakebed to protect an outlet pipe.

“The size and shape of this structure, called a chase, prevented the cofferdam bags from making a tight seal on the lakebed, allowing too much water to enter the work area for construction to continue on this part of the dam,” Zebrowski said in an email.

A cofferdam is a temporary watertight enclosure that is used to pump water out of an area to expose the bottom of a lake or river.

Despite the delays and extra work, Zebrowski said the original project is still on budget.

Cabin Lake provides water for fire protection, as well as a back-up supply of potable water for Jasper.

Last year, as part of a $211 million funding announcement, the Conservative government provided $1.6 million toward the rehabilitation of the Cabin Lake Dam in order for it to meet safety requirements.

Bottle depot moved to new location

The Jasper Recycle Depot is up and running at its new location, 57 Stan Wright Industrial Park— just across the parking lot from the old location. The hours of operation are Wednesday to Saturday 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

All beverage containers can be returned to the local Jasper Recycle Depot for refund. Every container that holds a drink has a refund of either 10 or 25 cents.

Last chance for a free planetarium show

The Jasper Planetarium is offering one last week of free shows for locals.

Much like last year’s show, which is specifically designed for Jasper, the presentation takes the audience on a swirling tour of the town’s night sky from outside the Information Centre to Pyramid Lake and the Columbia Icefield. Along the way, the audience learns about the constellations used by Cree and Blackfoot people and how local explorers used the stars to guide them through the park.

The planetarium is located outside Marmot Lodge.

The 35-minute shows begin at 8:45 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. every night. Folks who work in town can register for their free show online at www.jasperplanetarium.com.
