AHSFlu shots available in Jasper

The provincial government is once again offering free flu shots across Alberta to help reduce the spread of influenza.

To get the vaccine in Jasper, people can drop in at Rexall Pharmacy or Pharmasave anytime after Oct. 20. Both pharmacies offer flu shots for anyone who is nine years of age or older.

The Seton Healthcare Centre will provide flu shots for anyone six months of age or older, however the health centre’s hours vary from day to day.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) recommends people get the vaccine in October and November before peak flu season starts, which is often in January or later in the winter.

In addition to the vaccine, the best way to avoid getting sick and reducing the spread of illness is washing your hands frequently, avoiding contact with those who have signs and symptoms of an illness and staying at home if you are sick.

Drop in hours at the Seton Healthcare Centre are as follows: Oct. 22, Oct. 29, and Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Oct. 27 or Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

From Nov. 16 onwards, people can get the vaccine by appointment only between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Delayed winter access

Winter access into the Tonquin, Maligne-Brazeau and North Boundary areas will be restricted as of Nov. 1 for caribou conservation, according to Parks Canada.

The Tonquin area will reopen for winter recreation on February 16, 2016. All other areas will reopen February 29, 2016.

The closures are in place to help protect JNP’s Southern Mountain Caribou, listed as endangered under the Species at Risk Act.

Maligne Lake Ski Club AGM

The Maligne Lake Ski Club is hosting its annual general meeting Oct. 22 at the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives.

Several topics are expected to be on the agenda, including the club’s policy on booking Shangrila, a popular backcountry ski cabin in Maligne Valley.

Last winter the club had to cancel about two month’s worth of reservations after Parks Canada delayed winter access to the Maligne Valley to protect caribou, which are listed as endangered.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and will be held in the basement meeting room.

Drum circle returns

Habitat for the Arts is hosting three drum circle workshops this fall, starting Oct. 27.

Lisa Chell will once again be leading the workshop. It costs $15 for those who need to borrow a drum and $10 for those who bring their own.

To reserve a spot, call Marianne Garrah at 780-852-0359. The other workshops will be held Nov. 24 and Dec. 15.
