Artists on the move
After three successful months, the Hangout Gallery will close its doors Jan. 15, and the Jasper Artists Guild (JAG) will yet again be homeless.
The guild is waiting on the completion of the library and cultural centre, which has passed its original completion date by nearly a year.
The group has been setting up galleries all over town, since leaving the Old Fire Hall last year. For the summer, it was located in the Clock Tower, but the group moved out in September.
Knowing the artists were again homeless, Sam and Shelley Koebel allowed the group to use the space above SnowDome Coffee Bar for free on a three-month term.
During that time, the room was transformed into a beautiful space with art covering the walls and music filling the air.
JAG will now wait for the cultural centre to be completed before setting up another gallery. The last prediction as to when the building would be finished was the end of March.
Holiday workouts
Dying for a trip to the gym after all of the turkey and goodies you’ve been eating? Well, you’re in luck, the Jasper Fitness Centre is open for its regular hours Dec. 26–30. It is also open Dec. 31 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and New Year’s Day from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Aquatic Centre has reduced hours Dec. 31, closing at 3 p.m. and it’s closed for the entire day on Jan. 1.
Council to discuss meeting schedule
Coun. Rico Damota has requested that council review its schedule for committee of the whole meetings.
That request came at the Dec. 17 regular meeting. Damota said there seems to be a larger workload right now, that could benefit from council meeting more regularly.
Currently council has one committee of the whole meeting and one meeting with the municipality’s chief administrative officer each month, on top of the regularly scheduled meetings on the first and third Tuesday of every month.
That discussion will take place at the Jan. 21 meeting.
