Jensen sentenced to manslaughter

Cody Kyle Jensen was sentenced to four years in prison for stabbing a Cape Breton man to death in a hotel room in Jasper.

Jensen was sentenced to manslaughter, for the death of 22-year-old Kenzie Beaton, a stranger he stabbed in the Tonquin Inn Jan. 28, 2012.

Jensen and Beaton were both visiting town and staying in rooms beside one another. However, they didn’t know one another prior to the incident. At around 4 a.m., after an altercation and a fistfight, Jensen stabbed Beaton. Beaton later died of his injuries.

In court Aug. 25, Justice June Ross said Jensen’s use of a knife was “completely unnecessary,” even though he was concerned for his own safety.

After the sentence was handed down, Beaton’s parents said they were relieved that the trial was over, but that they will miss their son for the rest of their lives.

Road work on schedule

At a committee of the whole meeting Aug. 26, the municipality’s director of operations, Bruce Thompson, told council that the work currently causing road closures on the 800 block of Connaught Drive is “on schedule and within budget.”

“They’re doing an excavation every two or three days [and] are about three quarters of the way through,” Thompson said.

Workers have had to dismantle a few fences that were in danger of falling into the holes, but residents with affected properties have been largely cooperative.

“It’s moving along nicely and the weather’s been great,” Thompson said.

With work moving along nicely, Thompson said teams are getting ready to start on the Cabin Creek sidewalk construction, which will begin in September.

Charity cook-off

The Jasper Legion’s annual Barbecue Cook-off once again has local grill masters set to sear, season and cook up some tasty barbecue recipes.

The competition will take place this Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Jasper Legion, and will see 12 teams compete to see who can get participants licking their lips the most.

And the food should be top quality, as $1000 in prizes is up for grabs for the team that impresses participants in three different categories. Teams can begin grilling at 7 a.m., and the event will be open to the public by 1 p.m.

This year’s event will also feature a performance by country artist Clayton Bellamy.

Tickets are $25 and include a ticket to see Bellamy perform. All the money raised will be donated to the Children’s Wish Foundation and Military Police Fund for Blind Children.
