The Jasper Glaciers six-a-side football team wrapped up their fourth season in style with an awards banquet at the Crimson Hotel, Dec. 8.
The team competes in the Alberta 6-Man Football League, and boasts players from both Jasper Junior/Senior High School and École Desrochers. This year the team split the season with a 4-4 record, finishing fourth in its division.
This was also the first season with their new head coach Chuck MacKinnon.
“It was a very good year,” said MacKinnon, following the awards.
“The boys were outstanding, they all worked really, really hard.”
The banquet was an opportunity to celebrate the season and recognize the players, coaches and parents who made it possible.
First up was Chase Thompson, who took home the rookie of the year award. Hayden Clark won the most improved player of the year.
The most outstanding offensive player of the year award went to Jack Hilworth.
Defensive coach Jeff Wadsworth handed out the most outstanding defensive player award to David Broemeling.
Finally, Reed Eady accepted the Glaciers’ award of excellence for sportsmanship, leadership and quality.
The banquet marked the end of an era for five Glacier players who won’t be returning next year, but MacKinnon said he is confident the next crop of players will be more than capable.
“The guys that are left are outstanding, they’ll be very competitive next year.”
