The Jasper Novice Grizzlies hosted four out-of-town teams in the “Hockey in the Rockies” tournament last weekend and were able to experience full ice games against teams from larger centres.
On Friday, they played the Strathcona Dangerous Divas in their first game and later they played the Edmonton Wolves. On Saturday, they were up against the Edmonton Thunder and on Sunday they met up with the Calgary Fireballs.
The Grizzlies played with great energy and enthusiasm, working hard to protect their goal from the powerful visiting teams.
Lydia Storms, the Grizzlies’ goalie, played up a storm in all four games with a save average of 0.675 in the game against the Edmonton Thunder.
Storms was recognized as the team’s most valuable player (MVP) in its game against the Dangerous Divas on Friday and Paige Hugie was given a nod with the Heart and Hustle award.
In their game against the Wolves, Georgia Bell was the MVP and Sophie Bennett received the Heart and Hustle award.
On Saturday, those awards went to Bella Kovaks and Chloe Munn, respectively, for the game against the Thunder, and Zohwea Rayner and Annika Oeggerli, for the Grizzlies’ matchup against the Fireballs.
Following their games on Saturday, the Jasper teams hosted their annual banquet, with food provided by Shirley Dorin. As well as dinner, each of the teams performed a dance routine to the theme “Wigs, Glitter and Lashes.” Wendy Hall, who, in keeping with the theme, donned a sequin dress, was the emcee.
The Jasper Grizzlies would like to thank the community for making Hockey in the Rockies a successful tournament yet again.
