Fun on fat bikes

Jan. 19, about 30 riders saddled up for Jasper’s first ever Winter Cross—a series of fat bike races through Centennial Park.

The event was put on by the Jasper Park Cycling Association, and capitalized on the fat bike fad that’s swept through Jasper this winter. With their oversized tires and specially designed frames, fat bikes are ideal for pedaling through snow.

The relay race saw four-person squads face off to see which of them could net the most laps in 45 minutes. Six teams competed, and the Jasper Source for Sports team came out on top.

Of the five participants in the solo race later in the day, Charlie Diamond took home the top honour.

Matt Staneland of the Cycling Association said that, with the race attendance, and more than 30 people taking a spin on the demo bikes, the event was a “huge success.”
