Deputy Fire Chief Don Smith visited the Jasper Elementary School Oct. 8 as part of a week-long series of visits to talk to kids about fire prevention.
This year’s fire prevention theme is kitchen fires, and Smith spent about 45 minutes chatting with Grade 5 students about how to be safe in the kitchen, when to check your smoke alarm and how to make an escape plan.
After his talk, as the kids filed out of the library, Smith fielded questions from a gaggle of children pressed around him.
“What if you can’t catch my bunny? They’re pretty fast,” one girl said.
“Can you guys see my window if it’s in the back of my house?” another boy asked.
Smiling jovially, Smith answered as reassuringly as he could, until they were whisked off to their next class, goody bags dangling from their hands.
