Grade 1 student Calder Kreizenbeck was the lucky winner of an iPad mini, after a fire prevention brochure he created during Fire Prevention Week caught the eye of the Alberta Office of the Fire Commissioner.
The prize came courtesy of the Office of the Fire Commissioner and ATCO Electric, and was presented to him at an assembly at Jasper Elementary School Nov. 17.
According to Ross Bennett, from the Fire Comissioner Office, Kreizenbeck's brochure was one of 265,000 handed out to Alberta elementary students this year, but one of only a few selected as worthy of a prize.
In it, Kreizenbeck answered fire safety questions, and created an escape plan from his house in case of a fire emergency.
The contest was sponsored by ATCO, and along with several local representatives, Digger the ATCO groundhog was on hand for the presentation.
After the presentation, Kreizenbeck's dad scooped him into his arms as they, ATCO and Fire Brigade representatives posed for pictures in front of one of the Jasper Fire Brigade's fire trucks outside the school.
Kreizenbeck said he was very excited to have his new iPad, and that the first thing he was going to do with it was play Minecraft.
While Kreizenbeck chose to keep his feeling close to his chest, his mother said that there couldn't have been a better prize for him to win. She said she suspected he would get a lot of use out of his hard-earned prize.
