At a time when thousands of Syrian refugees are resettling in Canada, the next film to be screened by the Jasper Film Club offers a rare opportunity to pause and reflect on our own journey to Canada.

Cast in the early 1950s, Brooklyn is an exquisitely crafted story about the tale of a young immigrant in a strange new land.

Adapted from Colm Tóibín’s 2009 award-winning novel Brooklyn, the film follows the story of a young Irish woman who crosses the Atlantic Ocean lured by the promise of a better life in America.

Set up in a boarding house and working in a swanky Brooklyn department store, Eilis struggles to find her place—but soon meets Tony, a handsome young Italian man with an infectious passion for life.

Smitten by his good looks and the promise of a future in America, things seem to be looking up when a family tragedy strikes and she is forced to return to Ireland.

Upon returning home, she discovers that her perspective on life has dramatically changed and facing mounting pressure from family members to stay in Ireland she must decide where she wants to spend the rest of her life.

To find out if she returns to America or stays to support her family, you can catch the film at the Chaba Theatre Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.

The Jasper Film Club will continue playing films the first Thursday of every month until April. All shows start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for non-members and $8 for members.
