With sun in the forecast and a guide at their side, eight enthusiastic Jasperites hit the road for Tangle Falls, Jan. 28, with crampons, harnesses, ice axes and helmets filling the trunks of their cars.

The group—made up of young adults from as far away as Germany and Japan—were heading out with Jasper Life’s Mountain Adventure Club for an ice climbing expedition. This was the club’s first ice climbing day of the season. The next is organized for Feb. 8.

With the help of Max Darrah of Rockaboo Mountain Adventures and Ryan Verge, a young adult outreach worker and Jasper Life coordinator, all of the first time climbers made it to the top of at least two pitches on the waterfall about 100 kilometres south of Jasper on the Icefields Parkway. For some, that meant making it to the top—30 metres above the ground—while for others that meant making it to a nice resting spot halfway up the falls.

The purpose of the Mountain Adventure Club is to give young adults the opportunity to explore the park in a safe and organized way. Some of the club’s other winter activities include ski touring, CAT skiing and cross-country skiing.

To learn more about Jasper Life or to sign up for one of the Mountain Adventure Club’s many activities, search for Jasper Life on Facebook or pick up one of the monthly event calendars that are printed and distributed around town.
