7 more days in the ‘hell hole’
Jail is as unsavory as it’s depicted in the media, according to Montreal native Thomas Chaison who landed there after a stint of mischief in Jasper.
“It’s like a hell hole here. It’s dirty, it’s diseased, it stinks. It’s just like you see on TV,” he said, appearing by CCTV.
Chaison was sentenced to 30 days in jail, receiving credit for 21 days already served, and fined $5,013.16 for damaging Smitty’s restaurant, destroying a phone in the RCMP detachment and travelling on a CN sulfur train.
Despite living in Alberta for only fourth months, Chaison is accumulating many criminal offences, said Judge D.C. Norheim. “If you get into any more trouble, there is a good likelihood that you will be spending more time in the [jail] you are in now.”
Love pays the price
Spray painting words on a rock just west of the Highway 16 and 93 junction landed Roxann Beaton with a $400 fine.
Two hundred dollars of that fine will go toward removing the spray paint, which reads “Nick [heart shape] Roxy”. Norheim described the vandalism as “someone trying to bring the junk we see in the city to a national park.”
Without wheels and behind bars
Chad Wilson received 14 days in jail for driving while disqualified in April.
Wilson received a reduced sentence because his guilty plea in the early stages of the charge indicated that he wanted to deal with matters quickly, said Norheim.
