Jasperites can live vicariously through the lives of climbers, paddlers, runners, snowboarders and dreamers, Oct. 2, when the Jasper Legion hosts the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
As with previous years, the screening will include the best films from the year—including some of the award winning entries from the 2015 festival.
The festival will include eight films ranging in length from four minutes to 47 minutes. The shortest of the lot is Icefall, directed by Joseph Areddy. The 2013 film from Switerland captures ice climbers as they ascend waterfalls at night.
The longest film—this year’s winner of the Best Environmental Film award—is The Little Things, directed by Canada’s Darcy Turenne and produced by Marie-France Roy.
The Little Things is an environmental film featuring famed scientist and environmentalist David Suzuki alongside a cast of professional snowboarders with alternative lifestyles that have taken them off the beaten path in order to promote sustainable living.
The winner of the Best Mountain Culture Film award will also be screened.
Tashi and The Monk is a 40-minute film from India, directed by Andrew Hinton and Johnny Burke, that tells the story of Lobsang, a former Buddhist monk, who trained under the Dalai Lama.
Lobsang left his life as a spiritual teacher in the United States eight years ago to create a community in the foothills of the Himalayas that rescues orphaned and neglected children.
This year, VIMFF has partnered with Jasper Habitat for the Arts and will donate some of the proceeds to the arts organization’s Fall Series Workshops.
Tickets are available at the door or in advance at the Jasper Legion. Doors open at 7 p.m. and films start at 8 p.m.
If Friday night’s films don’t satiate your thirst for adventure, there will be a second VIMFF screening in Hinton, Oct. 3, with a focus on mountain biking. The event will take place at the Hinton Boston Pizza beginning at 1 p.m. Tickets are $30 and include entrance to the films, a pizza buffet and one beverage.
