Jasper’s Barley Queens battled their way into the finals of their own tournament, Nov. 9.
But, after a hard-fought game, they fell to the Calgary Twisted Irons, which won with a score of 2–1.
The weekend tournament was the first ever hosted by Jasper’s ladies hockey team, and saw seven teams make the trek into the mountains for three days of puck slinging.
On Nov. 11, Barley Queens goalie Wendy Hall gave a rundown of the team’s tournament showing.
The ladies went 2-0-1 during group play, easily defeating the Hinton Mustangs and Edmonton Hellions, and tying the Lac La Biche Cougars 6–6. That gave them 13 points and put them at the top of their group.
The Queens kept their streak going with a 4–1 win over the Calgary Randoms in the semi-finals, before suffering defeat at the hands of the Twisted Irons.
Overall it was an impressive showing, but apparently not quite good enough for Hall.
“Well, we feel like we lost. We really wanted to win,” she said.
“But we won the party,” she said, calling out the Twisted Irons for bailing on evening drinks at a far-too-early hour.
“They all went to bed at like, 10 o’clock,” Hall said with a friendly chuckle.
Overall Hall said the tournament was big success, and the team plans to host another next year.
“It was a super fun weekend,” she said.
