Ballgame with a twist

When the pitcher makes the rules and he’s wearing a pink moo-moo, an afro wig and a heavy-helping of concealer, you know it’s not just any game of softball—it is without a doubt a game with a twist.

In this case, that twist includes drag queens and kings using frying pans as bats and shopping bags as mitts.

The annual Emily Morgan Celebration Softball Tournament is held each September at Centennial Park, with a team of well-dressed queens and kings competing against players from the Jasper Mixed Slo-Pitch league.

The event was created eight years ago by Mychol Ormandy, Jasper’s only “female impersonator.” Emily Morgan is his niece; she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and received a double lung transplant at the age of nine. Five years later, at the age of 14, Morgan became sick and died.

To keep her memory alive and to ensure other families have the support they need when their kids are sick, the Emily Morgan Foundation was created.

To keep the foundation afloat, fundraisers like the softball tournament, are held each year. The tournament, as well as a silent auction at the Jasper Legion, raised nearly $1,000.
