This past summer, the Art Gallery of Alberta teamed up with Elk Island and Jasper National parks to deliver a unique photo contest.

It aimed to instantly transport Edmontonians (and visitors to the city) to Jasper and Elk Island. The contest featured a printed backdrop from Jasper’s Lake Edith red chair site and enabled gallery visitors to “picture themselves” in Jasper’s iconic landscape. Each photo submission was then entered into a weekly draw for a Parks Canada Discovery Pass and for a final grand prize weekend for two to Jasper’s Dark Sky Festival.

Where was the red chair location in the gallery?

Near its 1924 Rockies exhibit, featuring the works of Lauren Harris, AY. Jackson and Byron Harmon, of course.

This exciting and fun contest generated great exposure for Jasper’s new Red Chair Program and encouraged visitors to wish and dream about a trip to Jasper. Submissions rolled in steadily throughout the duration of the contest, from July 1 to Aug. 17, with the grand prize draw coinciding with the AGA’s 90th anniversary celebrations. The lucky contest winner is from Airdrie, Alta. and will get two nights in Jasper’s Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre and tickets to see Chris Hadfield on Oct. 25 courtesy of Tourism Jasper.

Jasper’s red chairs are now part of a wider Parks Canada program, found in national parks from coast to coast to coast.

Jasper National Park may see some additions to the existing six chairs in years to come. Seek them out yourself! Check out locations here: www.pc.gc.ca/jasperredchair.
