Following a productive work bee, May 10, members of the Jasper Local Food Society planted an apple tree in the Connaught Drive community garden in memory of one of the society’s founding members.
Jeanine D’Antonio, who the society described as a “an amazing woman with a bright spirit”, lost her battle with depression, April 16.
The vivacious woman, known for her love of boas and her quick, infectious laugh was an educator at the Palisades Stewardship Education Centre, a wildlife biologist and a former park warden. She was also a mother, wife, twin sister and a friend to many—as was especially evident at her celebration of life, which attracted more than 200 people last month.
To celebrate her bright spirit and her love for all things sparkly, the local food society planted a sparkle apple tree in a hole surrounded by rocks lovingly placed in the shape of a heart.
Preceding the planting, which was done by Karl Peetoom and Rev. Julio Martin of St. Mary and St. George Anglican Parish, Martin spoke of D’Antonio and the great loss the community has suffered since her passing.
“Love survives death,” he told the crowd of about 20 gardeners. “You still feel the love and you will continue to feel the love for Jeanine with the days and years to come.”
“Do not toughen up,” he advised, encouraging everyone to tend to their family and friends they way they tend to their gardens. “We have to care for each other the way we’ll care for this tree.”
Following a prayer, Martin blessed the tree, as Monika Schaefer and Ursula Winkler played “Apple Blossom Waltz” on violin.
