The sun shone brightly June 14, as the Jasper Volunteer Fire Brigade’s annual Community Safety Fair took over Jasper’s Emergency Services Building.
The fair, which each year aims to promote safety at home and in the community, brought together organizations from across the park, each with a booth set up to inform curious attendees about some aspect of safety.
The fair featured several interactive activities, including everything from a mock electronic fire extinguisher that tested fire control aptitude, to a Parks Canada demonstration on backcountry rescue that saw participants strapped to a stretcher.
It also gave children an opportunity to battle a faux forest fire with hand-pumped hoses, and even take a ride in a gleaming fire truck. Keeping growling stomachs at bay, organizers also cooked up some hot dogs and popcorn, which they gave out in exchange for donations.
Organizations as diverse as energy company Kinder Morgan and HIV West Yellowhead had a presence at the fair, and many were handing out top-notch swag—all with the hope of engaging kids and their parents on issues surrounding community safety.
