Edmonton documentarian to define Albertans

“He’s doing a wandering minstrel thing representing historical figures in Alberta,” said Marianne Garrah, the mind behind Artists on Rails.

The premise of Takach’s piece is that Albertans’ have their own identity, and he wants to share it with the rest of Canada.

Takach also recognizes that Jasperites have their own identity within Alberta, and he hopes to hear a bit about how locals view themselves in the context of Alberta.

“We’re unique here [in Jasper] because we’re in this special place and don’t feel the pressures that a lot of Alberta feels,” said Garrah. “Geo is really interested in people’s opinions as to how we feel about ourselves as Jasperites within Alberta.”

Takach will also be giving his presentation at the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives on September 13 at 7 p.m., followed by a Q & A session downstairs at 8 p.m. where he hopes to engage Jasperites in a discussion about what their vision for Alberta looks like.

The presentation will feature large format, black and white photographs taken by Kristen Wagner for her “I Am Albertan” project, which she designed for Alberta’s Centennial celebration in 2005.

Takach is a writer, performer, and filmmaker from Edmonton. He is also an instructor, teaching screenwriting at Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton, as well as for Alberta’s Film and Video Arts Society.

He has also served as President of the Writers Guild of Alberta, and has sat on the Board for the Edmonton Arts Council.
