Jasperites flocked to the Jasper Activity Centre Jan. 30, gripping paper cups and plastic spoons in an effort to stuff their faces with as much delicious chili as humanly possible.
The judges of the annual Chili Cook-Off had their work cut out for them this year, as 16 different organizations served up their best concoctions, from maple bacon chili to vegetarian lentil chili, to chili garnished with a dollop of jalapeno ice cream.
After tons of tasting, Earl’s Kitchen and Bar took the title of chili champion, followed by Sundog Tours in second place, the Jasper Dental Office in third, and the fourth place runner-up, Bear’s Paw Bakery.
The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge took home the People’s Choice title, netting the most votes from the masses who attended the cook-off.
But there was more than just a well-made chili at stake.
Teams also competed to see who had the best-decorated booth, and this year featured some spectacular submissions.
Whistler’s Inn took home the title with a liberal use of spandex for its ‘80s workout themed costumes. The Jasper Dental Office took home second place by decking themselves out in the likenesses of dead rock stars, while the Jasper Fire Brigade’s smoke machine helped them secure third place.
The dwarves of the ACFA were runners up, in fourth place.
