On the night before Christmas under a clear winter sky
I reluctantly enter the house with a sigh.
The stars were so brilliant, so much to admire,
But now it is time to relax by the fire.

With a day full of wonder fresh in head,
I really can’t wait to snuggle up in bed.
As I lay down, no thoughts of presents in my mind,
I think of what winter adventures we’ll find.

Spending Christmas in Jasper, there’s so much to do.
Downhill skiing was great and the après ski too;
Snowshoeing through forests, the sun on our backs,
Discovering vistas and animal tracks.

Today it was skating on lakes frozen like glass,
Magical, except when I fell on my … ski pass.
Then off for a break and to warm up our feet,
With specialty coffee, hot chocolate and treats.

We saw elk by the townsite and sheep on a hill,
A white ptarmigan standing perfectly still,
A coyote, a fox wearing furry black socks,
And waxwings alighting on trees in great flocks.

Some time was spent shopping for last minute presents,
An hour in the spa soaking in wonderful scents,
We dined and we danced then bundled up tight,
To gaze at the stars that light up the dark night.

Now I lay here to wonder what new things await,
Should I make out a plan or just leave it to fate?
Too many options, it is hard to decide,
So I focus instead on Santa’s sweet ride…

A sleigh pulled by reindeer, he surely must know
They’re perfect for travel in winter and snow.
There are some here in Jasper, caribou by name,
Though just as amazing, they lack Rudolph’s fame.

Less famous perhaps but I do hope that will change,
As these caribou need help all across their range.
There is still hope though, people like you and me
Are helping in both Alberta and B.C.

In Jasper you may see them in their alpine home,
As mountainous slopes and high forests they roam.
To see them you get the sense we’re connected.
It’s inspiring to know this land is protected.

At this time of year they get time and space,
As part of the plan to address threats they face.
By playing in parts of the park with no ‘bou,
We help keep the predators out of there too.

As I lay here dreaming of reindeer and fun,
My thoughts turn to the role played by everyone.
On this Christmas I’d like to thank one and all,
In this special place there’s no part too small.

From clearing or tracking and packing the snow,
Serving, housing and keeping us in the know,
Planning, fixing, rescuing and elk hazing too,
Both visitors and residents, yes, even you.

Whether mentioned or not, staff, friend or volunteer,
We want to thank you for all that you’ve done this year.
Our best wishes go out to those near and those far
Peace and joy to all of you wherever you are.
