Finding a new angle Print
MATTHEW TIMMINS, PHOTOJOURNALIST
January 21, 2010

As I stand on Second Bridge overlooking Maligne Canyon, I can hear the commands yelled from the rescue supervisor beside me as a Jasper National Park (JNP) safety specialist is lifted from the bottom of the canyon carrying a victim, found lying helpless at the bottom of what would be a deadly fall.

Meanwhile, over to my right, half a dozen children are pulling a rope, raising the safety specialist and victim up dozens of metres with the help of the rest of the safety crew – but despite the tug-of-war type photo-op, I don’t budge – this is good stuff.

I stay put, watching the couple dangle from the rope as the safety specialist loses his footing a little trying to climb over the edge.

But I know he’ll make it. Today everyone is calm. The safety crew doesn’t really need the help of children to raise the safety specialist and his volunteer victim – his wife – to safety.

And I am not the only person taking photos on the bridge – a couple dozen other onlookers have their cameras out as they watch the demonstration unfold.

For them, they might be visiting from a city, where this rescue demo is a unique experience. For me, I’m looking to give the readers – many of whom are used to hearing of JNP rescue stories - something exciting to watch and look forward to - something their kids can look at and think, ‘hey, that’s cool!’

Working as a photographer and reporter in a small town has its pros and cons. On one side, you quickly become involved in the community and can easily access events and opportunities. On the other hand, coming up with a fresh idea every week can be challenging.

But finding that eye-catching photo for the front page or that breaking story with the exciting headline is just part of keeping our readers informed and involved in the Fitzhugh both in print and online.

Through online polls, submitted opinion letters, community freelancer columns and the town’s weekly news, we try and keep you informed, captivated and interacting with us and the rest of Jasper.

So as I stand beside the rest of the onlookers who are watching the rescue unfold, I am taking well over 200 photos during a short five minute sling rescue. I am thinking, this is going to make a cool video.

This is something new for the Fitzhugh, as we are trying to bring more ideas and multimedia to our website. So when you’ve got a minute, check out JNP’s safety specialists as they show how they do those climbing and hiking rescues that you read about every so often in the paper. Hopefully you’ll find it as cool as I do. Or at least your kids will. Visit www.fitzhugh.ca/photos to see the show.

Do you think the delay in the Glacier Discovery Walk decision means it’s less likely the project will be approved?
