A call for columnists Print
JUSTIN BRISBANE, EDITOR
September 03, 2009

Part of our job here at the Fitzhugh is to engage readers. We hope to write stories about residents that make a difference and that affect lives.

But, from time to time, we write opinion pieces, here on the back page, that are meant to generate discussion.

Well, we try.

Sometimes humourous, sometimes well argued, sometimes just a good story, we save this space as an opportunity for our staff to express their views and thoughts. Consider it an outlet for the attempts at objectivity in reporting.

So consider myself shocked when I wrote a piece in last week’s paper about reducing meat consumption and received NEXT TO NO RESPONSE. We received one ‘letter’, dripping with sarcasm from one of the paper’s owners, but nothing from the rest of the community. No angry butchers, no passionate vegans mocking my commitment, no number crunchers doubting gas usage versus methane production.

Puzzled, I attributed it to a busy week in Jasper, as everyone is swamped finishing out the summer.

But come on people.

Now I’m not one to perpetrate stereotypes, but I was under the impression that Albertans love their beef. I’m also under the impression that they hate being told what to do, especially by those from the east. Imagine, an Ontario native – who lived in Toronto of all places for two years -  in northern Alberta, preaching about the evils of eating meat.

Now I’m quite aware Jasper considers itself different than the rest of Alberta. The mountain air and $9 cover fee has produced a different breed out here, however core values are core values.

So while I thought about taking another crack at eliciting a response (National Energy Program anyone), I think it best to throw the ball back in your court, dear readers.

The Fitzhugh is looking for a few good columnists. I’d like to add a greater diversity of opinions to the paper, and believe that those opinions can be found in the community.

The assignment would not be difficult. I’m looking for individuals who can write passionately about their community, about what matters to them in Jasper. Citizens who understand the community, or are just capable of telling a good story once and a while.

The column will not be an opportunity to promote a business or simply rant madly about why your life is so miserable. I’d like it to be a chance for talented writers to hone their editorial skills, to explore the joy of storytelling. I know there are several in the community.

There will be no assignments or extra time commitments. Just a deadline.

The commitment won’t be large – perhaps a few 500 word opinion pieces a year – on topics that affect local residents. I’d rather steer away from foreign policy or Hollywood gossip.

To apply, simply send me an email at editor@fitzhugh.ca or give me a call at 780-852-4888. A writing sample would be nice to see, or at least an idea about what you’d like to write about. Ideally, I’d love to get writers from all segments of the community: seniors, seasonal workers, nature lovers, arts lovers, commerce lovers, students. The greater the diversity, the greater the product.

So if you or someone you know would like the chance to see their name appear in print, please let me know.

And you don’t have to eat tofu to qualify.
