A fang-tastic night Print

If I had any doubts before, I’m now convinced that moving to Jasper was the right thing to do.

As the end of October nears, I’ve been told time and again that Jasper is the town for Halloween. That people go all out with their costumes. That packed-full celebrations trail on long into the night.

You see, I’m the biggest Halloween fan you’ve ever met.

It’s the best holiday of the year. I get to dress up. I get to wear lots of makeup and do my hair. I get to go out and have fun with friends. I have an excuse to talk to strangers – to ask, “What are you supposed to be?” I get to watch scary movies and eat loads of candy. I get to dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. I don’t have to buy anybody gifts or prepare any special meal. I don’t have to go to church.

There’s a strong sense of community. Whether you go to a wild party or hand out treats at the door, Halloween gives neighbours and friends a chance to say hello. Everyone is in good spirits and praises a clever costume.

Maybe if you weren’t into playing dress-up as a child, you won’t like Halloween. But for me, it’s a thrill to be someone else, even if it is just for one night.

Though recognizing many of the people you see on the street is one of the great things about living in a small town, Halloween is the perfect chance to transport away for a night and see all new faces, for a change.

If you haven’t gone out and picked up a costume, there’s still time. Run to the store or scour your closet and escape the day-to-day for one night.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing you. Whoever you are.
