Members of the Jasper Gymnastics Club returned from a competition in St. Albert over the weekend with some extra gold, silver and bronze around their necks.
All in all, the team brought home 12 medals across several disciplines, five of them belonging to Kiana Lausen.
The nine-year-old athlete “cleaned up the competition,” said head coach Nadia Wassef, earning three gold medals, one silver and one bronze in the provincial Level 1 category.
Madelaine Britt, meanwhile, picked up three silver medals and a bronze in the Level 4 category for 10- and 11-year-olds.
Also earning medals were Emma Glover, who won bronze in Level 1 beam for nine-year-olds, Julie Smith, who won bronze in Level 1 beam for 10- and 11-year-olds, and Caitlin Zaniol, who won bronze in Level 3 floor exercise for 12- and 13-year-olds.
“Many of these girls have moved up a level from last year and have been working hard over the year,” Wassef said.
There are five provincial levels in Canada before athletes compete at the national level, she noted, “so Jasper is doing really well working at a variation of levels.”
Other results of note:
• Isabelle Glover placed eighth on beam and 10th all-around in the Level 1 category for nine-year-olds;
• Olivia Hardy placed eighth on floor and 12th all-around in the Level 1 category for 10- and 11-year-olds;
• Anastasia Gorontzy-Slack took 10th place on vault and beam and 13th place all-around in the Level 2 category for 10- and 11-year-olds;
• Robyn Patry, attending her first competition ever, took 10th place on vault and bars and 11th place all-around in the Level 2 category for 12- and 13-year-olds.
The higher-level competitors are off to another competition in Edmonton this weekend, Wassef said.
