Jasper hockey fans are in for a unique experience, a Wolves game featuring Gilbert Perrault, Tiger Williams and officiated by Eddie Shack.
On Monday, December 5, a group of six former NHLers will join several Jasper old-timers for an exhibition tilt against the Wolves. The proceeds of the game will go to Jasper Minor Hockey.
The game was added to the Old Timers schedule just recently, according to organizer Peter Hayashi.
“We’ve been working on it for the last month or so,” he said. “They fit us in because there was interest on their part to come to Jasper.”
Hayashi is printing 1,000 tickets for the game and while some are on sale now at Cavell Drugs and a number of other stores, the majority have been dispersed through the minor hockey system.
“It’s up to the kids to sell them,” Hayashi said.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for kids up to the age of 14. In addition to the ticket proceeds, Minor Hockey will be organizing a beer garden and running a 50/50 draw.
Besides Perrault, half of the Buffalo Sabres’ famed “French Connection” that torched goaltenders in the 1970’s, and Williams, who earned nearly 4,000 penalty minutes in his 14-year career, the NHL alumni playing in Jasper are not household names.
Richard Brodeur, who backstopped the 1982 Vancouver Canucks all the way to the Stanley Cup finals, will be between the pipes for the Old Timers. Jim Mann, a former first-round draft choice of the Winnipeg Jets and Dennis Polonich, an ex-Detroit Red Wing, will be joined on the ice by Bob Bourne, a multiple Stanley Cup champion with the New York Islanders who recorded more than 250 goals in his career.
Shack, who will be refereeing the game with local assistance, was renowned for his spirited play and excellent skating ability. He was even the subject of a song entitled “Clear the Track, Here Comes Shack.” Having played in Toronto and Boston for most of the 1960’s, “the Nose” has been entertaining hockey fans on the Old Timers circuit for many years.
Hayashi hopes that the prospect of seeing locals playing with and against these legendary names will lead to a sold-out arena and an unforgettable experience.
“It’s kind of the perfect time of year for Jasper because it’s kind of a lull,” he said.
Local businesses have been quick to throw their support behind the event. The Jasper Park Lodge has donated accommodation for the ex-NHL players and the Jasper Brew Pub will be laying on the pre-game meal. |
