The Jasper Freestyle team is gearing up for a busy few months, with two of its athletes preparing for Canadian Series events.
This weekend, the team will travel to Grande Prairie to compete in five events: moguls, slopestyle, Half-pipe, Big-Air, and Traditional Aerials. Ten athletes from Jasper will be competing, in hopes of bringing home some hardware. All of the Jasper athletes will compete in the moguls competition.
The club will follow that up with a competition in Red Deer on Jan. 23 and 24. About 25 athletes are expected to participate in the event, which will act as more of a fun event. Club competitions give skiers a chance to hone their skills before moving onto higher competition. Club competitions often consist of mogul and ‘table-top’ events.
The next provincial event will be held at Castle Mountain in Pincher Creek on Jan. 29 and 31. Provincial events represent a higher level of competition, and help athletes qualify for provincial teams. This will be the final warm-up before the Alberta Winter Games on Feb. 4th to 7 in Cold Lake.
The final provincial event will be in Jasper on April 1-4.
Two Jasper athletes are heading for two Canadian series events in Val Saint-Côme, Quebec Jan. 14-17, and Jan 21-24. Imogen Jenkins and Addison Eady will be travelling to Quebec with coach Chris Peel. There will be a single moguls event and a duals mogul event at each weekend.
Canadian Series events are attended by the provincial teams and the elite club level athletes from each province who are aiming to earn provincial team spots.
Because these events are scored higher, the athletes can establish a higher ranking than simply attending the provincial events.
Jasper Freestyle team members also have a Canadian Series at Silver Star March 19-21 and will hopefully send a few more athletes to that competition. |
