The Jasper Senior High girls golf team won silver medals and the boys team won bronze medals at the recent provincial finals in Sherwood Park.
The result marks the girls’ third consecutive second-place finish at provincials, and the team had a good shot at winning it all this year, according to one of the team member’s parents.
“They were only one shot out of first place after day one,” said Della Carson. “And on day number two they all played well; it’s just the other team beat them – they played even better.”
A team from Okotoks ended up taking home the gold medals, she said.
The Jasper boys team also had a strong outing, taking third place overall out of a field of 12 teams.
“Coming third out of 12 was great, considering we didn’t have a team last year,” said parent Lee Chorley.
The team was in second place after the first round of play at the Broadmoor Golf Club but came in with higher scores on the second day as they took on the more challenging course at Belvedere Golf Club. Chorley said the boys were happy to come away with the third-place finish.
Team member Travis Chorley also ended up in fourth place overall, individually, at the tournament. Last year he took first place as an individual, winning the title of Alberta Provincial Champion in a playoff.
The provincials were held at the Belvedere Golf Club and Broadmoor Golf Club in Sherwood Park on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. The girls played one 18-hole course one day while the boys played the other, then on the second day they switched courses.
Both teams qualified for provincials by winning the zone championships in Westlock on Sept. 19.
Carson said this will likely be the last year for the girls team, as three of the players are set to graduate. Three of the boys are also graduating but parents figure the school should still be able to field a team next year, as there a quite a few talented golfers in the younger grades.
“There’s definitely enough for a team next year,” Lee Chorley said. “We’d love for them to keep it going.”
Members of the 2011 girls team are: Kayla Carson, Kelsey Zaffino, Brianna Bossio and Alexandra Bossio. Members of the boys team are: Travis Chorley, Ryan Ewald, Zach Brochu and Davis Coleman. |
