An Edmonton man who organized a running club trip for the University of Alberta was fined Thursday for keeping a messy campsite.
Harrison S. Moore was fined $150 for failing to maintain his camp at Whistlers Campground in August during the Oct. 8 sitting of the Jasper Provincial Court.
The young man pleaded guilty to the charge and said he was camping in Jasper with friends from the cross country running club from the University of Alberta.
The group was in the park to hike the Skyline trail, said Moore, who was the permit holder for the campsite, and organizer of the weekend.
Prior to issuing the fine, Jasper National Park wardens gave the group verbal warnings about excessive noise, garbage around the campsite, and liquor.
“I regret that I was not able to be responsible for my party and their actions,” said Moore prior to sentencing.
During sentencing, Judge D. Norhiem asked Moore if he would be asking for payment from some of the other individuals involved, to which Moore replied.
“Yes, I’ll be asking my buddies to pay.”
In a similar case, Jesse W. Melnychuk was fined $150 for leaving food out unattended at Whistlers Campground on Aug. 16.
Melnychuk pleaded guilty to having left chips, cans, greasy food, and garbage around his campsite.
When park wardens went to assess the situation, Melnychuk and his three friends were asleep at the site so wardens returned the next morning to find the camp still in the same condition.
“Sorry for disrespecting the park and it wont happen again,” Melnychuk said
Although the crown requested a $300 fine, Norhiem fined the man $150. |
