The Jasper Freeride Freestyle Team and former members that are now representing the Alberta team fared very well in the Canada Post Canadian Freestyle Junior National Championships from March 10 to 13, at Marmot Basin.

Jasper Freeride President Cam Jenkins said he felt that Jasper Freeride and Marmot Basin pulled off an amazing event.

“Athletes from B.C. and Quebec, who have been competing since December, came up to us to say that this was the best moguls course they had skied all year,” said Jenkins.

He added that though the slopestyle and big air courses were the most challenging to build, the jumps saw competitors throwing huge air, including a double cork 12.

“I was standing near the judges – there were eight from all over Canada – five of who have judged at the World Cup level,” said Jenkins. “One of the coolest things was listening to them say that they were blown away by the creative and inventive way that the kids pushed the envelope.”

Jenkins said the Freeride team were excited that the event was held in their own back yard.

“I think it increased their excitement level.”

He said the Freeride team has always shown their strength in moguls, and over 50 per cent of the Alberta Mogul Team has come out of Jasper.

“I think we served notice to the nation that we can host a national event,” he added.

Jenkins said the volunteers that contributed were unbelievable in their efforts.

“And we couldn’t have done it without the Canadian Rockies Academy,” he added. “We also have to give a shout out to Gunner and Dennis, groomers at Marmot, for putting up national level venues.”

The Freeride Team will not get much of a rest as they gear up for the Alberta Freestyle Skiing Championships, being held at Marmot Basin from April 1 to 3.

Local results are as follows:

Jaymes Schmidt was awarded the bronze medal in his age group in single moguls and in dual moguls.

Former Jasper Freeride member and current member of the Alberta Moguls Team, Max Novotny, placed fourth in slopestyle.

Jasper Freeride team member Sam Ruttiman placed fifth in his age group in slopestyle.

Jasper Freeride team members Emile Brown and Melissa Hiron placed seventh and 14th respectively in female (F3) single moguls.

Former Jasper Freeride members Novotny and Troy Minogue placed sixth and eight respectively in the M2 single moguls.

Jasper Freeride team member Brendan Mahler placed 18th in the M2 single moguls.

Jasper Freeride team members Bradley Anselmo and Addison Eady placed 12th and 16th respectively in the M3 single moguls.

Former Jasper Freeride team member Minogue placed third overall in the M2 dual moguls.

All the Jasper team members represented Alberta at the competition. The events were judged on time (25 per cent), air off the jumps (25 per cent) and turns/following the fall line (50 per cent).

Unofficial results revealed that Alberta came away with the most medals in the competition with 23 medals.
