Run to make some funds Print

In keeping with its 29 year long history, the Terry Fox Run is on again this weekend in Jasper.

Unlike Fox, you only need to run five kilometres – unless you’d like to do two laps and make it 10km – to help raise money for cancer research.

The event was nearly wiped off the Jasper calendar until Stephanie English, local athlete and recent Ironman competitor, came to the rescue.

As there are many other events on that weekend, including the Rona MS Bike Tour, English hopes to raise around $4,000 for the charity.

“It’s a non-competitive race,” she said, “in big bold letters – there’s no timing, there’s no first place, there’s nothing along those lines.”

While there is a big start at 11 a.m. on Sunday, English is welcoming people to the loop which will be open until 2 p.m.

“If you want to come at noon or later, then that’s fine too,” she added.

Due to the location, which is the Lake Edith loop, strollers and wheelchairs can all be part of the action as well.

The last event English organized was the Spring Run Off, which had 158 competitors so she’s hoping to get about 60 to 70 people out this weekend.

In addition to the Jasper run, a group of hikers also plan to climb Mount Terry Fox on Saturday to raise money for cancer research.

Participants in that event can meet at the Terry Fox turn-off on Highway 5 near Valemount at 7:30 a.m.
