U-16 soccer team at top of tournament
The U-16 and U-18 girls soccer teams shone in the dark in the annual night classic tournament in Camrose this weekend, in which the teams each play one game shortly after midnight.
The U-16 team brought home the gold and the U-18 girls scored a silver.
U-16 coach Jessica Prinn said that over her time as coach she’s watched the team get better and better.
“They’ve improved so much over this last year, it’s crazy,” she said. “It’s a completely different team, they’re great to watch.”
Noteworthy players were defensemen Sidney Gittens and Tonya Garford.
Kim Wallace accompanied the U-18 team as guest coach, said soccer Mom Laurie Buck.
“Though they play really good, generally speaking, they fell apart in the gold medal match,” Buck said.
The teams head to Stony Plain this weekend for Soccer Fest, the zone finals for the northwest central region.
Two weekends ago, the U-10 girls played in their first out-of-town tournament at the annual soccer festival in Edson on June 8.
Coach Marion Lee said score wasn’t kept so it was a great chance for fun game-play.
“One thing is you can teach drills and skills, but they have a chance to learn when they play,” Lee said. “They had so much fun, and that was key.”
19 of the 20 girls who registered went out to play and the team was also accompanied by coach Janet Frechette.
The team closed the season with its last practice on June 18. |
